American Pasteurization Company Hosts Event Honoring Senator Herb Kohl

Event highlights Kohl’s work to improve Food and Drug Administration

MILWAUKEE (Aug. 18, 2011) – Earlier this week, American Pasteurization Company (APC) hosted an event centered on the importance of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and to honor Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.) for his work to improve the agency and spotlight its importance to Wisconsin’s food industry and consumers.
Sen. Kohl currently serves as Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee, which has jurisdiction over the FDA. He has been a significant champion of improving the FDA and has helped to advance the agency through increasing the availability of necessary resources.

Under Sen. Kohl’s tenure, the FDA has improved its global capacity by opening international offices in China and India, significantly improved rates of inspection of FDA products – both domestically and abroad – and begun important innovation initiatives (e.g., the Advancing Regulatory Science Initiative). The FDA also is working to implement the recently passed Food Safety and Modernization Act, of which Sen. Kohl was a key supporter.

“We were honored to host an event recognizing Sen. Kohl for his contributions to the FDA and the food industry overall,” said Justin Segel, CEO of APC. “In fact, it was fitting that we hosted the event, as our facility is the former home of a Kohl’s meat packing plant. We were pleased to have the opportunity to show Sen. Kohl how the facility has evolved to help provide a safe processing solution for the food industry and build the state’s economy through new business and job creation.”

The event, sponsored by the Alliance for a Stronger FDA, brought together individual leaders and executives representing consumer, patient and industry organizations to provide awareness on the FDA’s impact on their respective organization or industry. It also reaffirmed the need for collaboration to help increase the agency’s appropriations, ensuring it has the funds necessary to provide safe and effective therapies, foods, cosmetics, and medical products to consumers.

American Pasteurization Company (APC), founded in 2004, is the first company to offer high pressure processing (HPP) on a commercial tolling basis to the food manufacturing industry.
